Grants of up to €40,000 to adapt your home. Here's how they work, and who does the work.
Level-access showers, stairlifts, ramps, wider doorways, downstairs toilets, funded by your local authority. Find contractors and occupational therapists in your county, and understand the process before you spend anything.
Which grant applies to you
Three separate schemes, all run by your local authority. Most people only ever hear about one of them.
Structural work: level-access showers, downstairs toilets, widened doorways, ramps, through-floor lifts, extensions.
Means tested on gross household income. An occupational therapist report is usually required.€8,000Mobility Aids GrantBasic mobility works: grab rails, ramps, stairlifts, level-access showers.
Household income must be under €37,500. Rose from €6,000 on 1 December 2024. OT report needed for stairlifts and hoists.€10,700Housing Aid for Older PeopleEssential repairs rather than adaptations: rewiring, heating, roofing, structural repair.
Income taper applies. An OT report is usually not required.Maximum amounts. Figures as published on gov.ie, checked August 2026. Thresholds change and councils apply them differently, so always confirm with your local authority.
The adaptations people use them for
Each one is a different kind of firm. Tap through to the ones covering your county.

Stairlifts

Four steps, in this order
Doing them out of order is what costs people money. The OT report comes before the quotes, always.
Check which grant
Your local authority runs all three. The scheme decides the maximum and whether you need an OT report.
Get the OT report
Needed for most adaptations, and for any stairlift or hoist. Ring your council about the waiting list, or go private.
Get three itemised quotes
Written and broken down, from contractors who understand grant work. Not phone estimates.
Wait for written approval
Only then does work start. Anything done before approval is not covered.
Four things that delay or void an application
None of these appear on a contractor's website, because every one of them costs them a sale or slows one down.
Never start work before written approval
Work begun before the council approves it is not covered, no matter how obvious the need or how long you've waited. This is the most common reason applications fail.
Three itemised quotes, not three estimates
A price over the phone or a one-line total won't do. Each quote must break down the work so the council can compare like with like.
Your contractor must be tax compliant
The council will not release payment to a contractor without current tax clearance. Check before you choose, not after the work is done.
The grant is paid in arrears
You pay first and claim after. The approved amount is also a ceiling: if the final bill comes in higher, the difference is yours.

The occupational therapist report is what holds everything up
Most adaptations need an OT report before the council will approve anything, and public waiting lists can run for months. You can pay a CORU-registered occupational therapist privately to get it done far faster, and some councils allow part of that cost into your application.
Ring your council and ask two questions first
- How long is the OT waiting list?
- Can I use a private OT, and can any of the fee go into my application?
Those two answers decide your whole timeline.

Pick your county to see firms based there first, then firms that cover it from elsewhere, then nationwide.
Details below are taken from each business's own website and public council lists. We have not independently verified them. Check credentials, insurance and tax clearance yourself before hiring anyone: the council won't pay a contractor without it.
Describe the job once. Hear back from providers in your county.
Tell us where you are with the grant and what needs doing. We pass it only to the types of provider you tick, covering your county.

Straight answers
How much is the housing adaptation grant in Ireland?
Up to €40,000 under the Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability, up to €8,000 under the Mobility Aids Grant, and up to €10,700 under Housing Aid for Older People. All three are means tested and run by your local authority. How each one works.
Do I need an occupational therapist report?
For most adaptations, yes, and always for a stairlift or hoist. Public waiting lists can run for months, so ask your council how long the list is and whether you can use a private, CORU-registered OT.
Can I start the work and claim the grant afterwards?
No. Work started before written approval from the council is not covered. Approval first, then work, then the claim.
Can I use any contractor?
Usually you choose, but the council will want three itemised quotes and will only pay a contractor with current tax clearance. Check that before you pick one.
Is HomeAdapt part of the council?
No. We're an independent directory. We explain how the grants work and list the firms and therapists who do grant-funded work. Your application always goes to your own local authority.
Is it free?
Yes, for homeowners. Businesses list free until 31 January 2027.
